Human Consciousness and the Soul

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Ever wondered if there is a connection between human consciousess and the soul?

According to many spiritual leaders and gurus, consciousness is the very foundation of who we are.

It is what gives us life and animates our bodies. Without consciousness, we would simply be lifeless shells. In fact, some believe that consciousness is the only thing that truly exists; everything else is an illusion.

The soul, on the other hand, is often seen as something that transcends consciousness. It is the divine spark within each of us that connects us to the greater whole. Some say it is immortal, while others believe it reincarnates lifetime after lifetime.

Either way, the soul is seen as something far more vast and eternal than our individual selves.

So what exactly is consciousness and what role does the soul play in all of this?

Let’s take a look at what some of the world’s most renowned spiritual leaders have to say on the matter.

The first person we will examine is Ramana Maharshi, considered one of India’s greatest saints.

He taught that consciousness is not something that arises from matter; rather, it is the very essence of who we are. Our physical bodies are just temporary vehicles for consciousness to manifest itself in this world. Ramana also had a lot to say about the soul. He believed that it was our true nature and that it lay beyond all conceptualization.

The soul cannot be described or understood with the mind; it can only be experienced directly through self-realization.

Next, we will turn to Sri Aurobindo, another Indian spiritual leader who was highly influential in the early 20th century.

He agreed with Ramana Maharshi that consciousness is our essential nature, but he also saw it as being dynamic and constantly evolving.

For Aurobindo, evolution was not just a biological process; it was also a spiritual one. He believed that humanity was evolving towards a higher level of consciousness, which he called thesupermind. This supermind would eventually bring about a radical transformation in human beings, making them into gods and goddesses.

Once again, this evolution was not something that could be explained by science; it was driven by a higher power beyond our understanding.

Finally, let’s take a look at someone who is perhaps even more famous than either of these two Indian saints: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

He popularised Transcendental Meditation in the West during the 1960s and 1970s, and his teachings have had a profound impact on millions of people around the world. Maharishi teaches that there are three levels of reality: gross, subtle, and causal.

Gross reality consists of things like our physical bodies and material objects; subtle reality includes things like thoughts and emotions; while causal reality is the level of pure consciousness itself—which he referred to as “the Unified Field” or “the Self”.

And what about the soul?

For Maharishi, the soul was simply another name for pure consciousness, which means it too resides in the Unified Field. In other words, our souls are not separate from anything else in existence; they are One with All That Is.

As you can see, there are many different ways you could understand consciousness and the soul.
But
despite their differences, all of these spiritual leaders and gurus agree on one thing: that both consciousness and the soul are incredibly important aspects of who we are.
